| Andorra is a small country of just 181 square miles located in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, it’s capital is Andorra La Vella. It has a very prosperous tourist industry due to its status as a tax haven. Most people visit Andorra for one of three reasons, to go shopping or skiing or just to get from Spain to France or vice versa.
The scenery in Andorra is quite spectacular and the roads that twist their way through the mountains are a biker’s paradise. What is quite incredible is how in just a short time you can go from sweltering heat in Spain to driving through snow at the highest point in Andorra and then back to the heat just as quickly in France!
Although the country uses the Euro it is not a member of the European Union. It is estimated that over 9 million people visit the country each year attracted by the duty free prices and the summer and winter resorts. The resorts have had heavy investment to make them the best in the Pyrenees and there are now many mountain cafes and restaurants which serve skiers in the winter and walkers and hikers in the summer.
Aside from tourism the country’s banking sector is very important to it’s economy and the country also produces cigarettes, brandy and anisette, a drink similar to pastis although sweeter and less potent. Andorra also produces 40% of its own electricity via a hydroelectric power station near Encamp.
With a pleasant temperate climate and an average of 300 sunny days each year Andorra is worth visiting at any time of the year and always has plenty to offer all tourists.
