Finding your GPS coordinates

If you are trying to find out the GPS coordinates of your property or anything else this can be done without the aid of a GPS unit but is somewhat involved if you wish the result to be accurate. By far the easiest way is to buy or borrow a GPS unit or ask your guests if they have one, you'll be surprised how many do.

However, if you wish to find your coordinates using my backup method then carefully follow the instructions below. Clicking the small maps to the right will open a larger version in another window so you can see what I am talking about. Set your browser to allow pop-ups for this.

There are two sites I use to work out GPS coordinates, one being http://www.multimap.com/ the other http://jeeep.com/details/coord/. Start by opening up Multimap by clicking on the link above. This will bring you to Multimaps main page.
We are going to find the GPS coordinates of my house in the UK for this explanation. If you wish to use it for finding a location in another country later then use the drop down menu in the top left corner marked 'country' to select the country of your search.
Where it says country in the top left corner it should say Great Britain and NI and below that 'postcode'. In the box below 'postcode' fill in mine SO32 1LX then click 'find' it will then display the page shown right.
Now, the red circle is over the centre of that postcode area, not my house. What you would do now is click on the map exactly where your house is, as I will do now and this will centre the page on where my house is. See right. You will also notice it has zoomed in on the location.
But the red circle is still where it was. To move it to the new location over your house 'click' on the blue underlined link just below the map where it says
Web Address:www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=50.9584&lon=-1.2192&scale=5000&icon=x
The red circle is now over my house. Right now, the link underlined in blue just below the map is the hyperlink that you can copy and put onto your website so that when anyone 'clicks' it the map you see will pop up on their screen with the red circle over your house. Also, look just above that link and you will see a set of GPS coordinates. These are the GPS coordinates of your/my house.
I hope this is of some help.
