| The Haute Savoie is the 74th department of France and has borders with Switzerland to the north, Italy to the east and the department of Ain to the west. It also borders lake Geneva (in French Lac Léman), the largest natural freshwater lake in Western Europe, from which flows the Rhone River. The town of Évian-les-Bains, famous for it’s mineral water lies on the French shore of the lake.
Mont Blanc, Europe’s second highest mountain (4808M) is located in the Haute Savoie as are many of the most popular ski resorts such as Chamonix. The department is also where the cheese Reblochon comes from, an important ingredient in one of my favourite dishes, Tartiflette, made with sliced potatoes, onions, ham, white wine and cream. An ideal dish for the cold winters of the area. As you would expect from an area which boarders Switzerland, the scenery is stunning in both winter and summer which makes the Haute Savoie a busy tourist destination all year round. |
