Things to see and do in the area
Ansac sur Vienne is a small village, with a couple of Cafe Bars and an excellent Boulangerie/patisserie, situated on the banks of the picturesque Vienne river, about 2.5kms upstream (south) of the beautiful medieval market town of Confolens. It is almost centrally located in the triangle of the historic cities of Angouleme (40mins), Limoges (50mins) and Poitiers (1hr). It is approximately 2hours from the Atlantic coast, 2 1/2 hours from La Rochelle and Bordeaux. It is only half an hour from France's 'Lake District' - Les Lacs du Haute Charente, with beaches, watersports and a woodland adventure park. A Velo-Rail system runs from Confolens to Manot, through Ansac. This involves up to 5 people on a cart, with two pedalling along the disused railway track - the 15km trip takes about two and a half hours, so it helps if at least two of the party have fit legs!(www.velorail16.com) Vallee des Singes - home to 30 species of primates, from the tiniest squirrel monkeys to a family of Gorillas, most of which you can enter their enclosures (don't worry - not the gorillas!) and watch them feed and interact - a fantastic day out less than an hour away.(www.la-vallee-des-singes.fr) A whole variety of charming Chateaux are within easy reach, such as Rochechouart (with nearby roman ruins), Rochebrune, La Rochefoucauld and the stunning hilltop ruins at St Germain de Confolens and Gencay. The area also boasts many fine examples of medieval churches. At Chasseneuil (20mins) is the National memorial centre to the French Resistance in WW2, while the village of Oradour sur Glane (30mins) has been preserved untouched since the day in June 1944 when the German SS, on their way to Normandy, rounded up and killed all but a handful of the villagers and set fire to the town - a truly moving place.(www.oradour.info) The Circuit du Vallee de la Vienne (30 mins) holds some excellent motor racing weekends, whilst Angouleme becomes an inland Monaco for the middle of September, when the centre within the ramparts is closed to traffic for a festival of races of classic and vintage sports and racing cars.(www.circuit-des-remparts.com) Futuroscope is a fantastic scientific and futuristic theme park at Poitiers (1hr) which makes an excellent day out for all the family.(www.futuroscope.com)
